Project description
FeelTect delivers Tight Alright – the first device to use wearable, connected-health technology, combined with a digital platform, for monitoring compression therapy during venous leg ulcer treatment.

Venous leg ulcers (VLUs) are chronic wounds that affect 2.3 million people in Europe each year, predominantly those aged over 65 – a population highly susceptible to COVID-19. Compression therapy is the gold-standard treatment for VLUs, however shortages in healthcare personnel due to COVID-19 combined with difficulty in providing safe and effective compression means most VLUs are currently under-served. Tight Alright is a connected-health technology for self-managed compression therapy of VLUs.

Economic rationale / Business Model
Venous Leg Ulcers (VLUs) are chronic wounds caused by a failure of the veins in the lower legs, affecting 11.5 million people worldwide each year. Compression therapy is the cornerstone of VLU treatment, however it’s extremely difficult to administer consistent levels of safe and efficacious pressure using current compression products. Ineffective therapy causes delayed healing times (20% of VLUs don’t heal within a year) and exorbitant healthcare costs (VLU payer burden in the USA is $14.9 billion).

Tight Alright’s ability to enable consistent provision of gold-standard compression therapy and patient self-management has the potential to reduce healing times by 5-weeks and lower costs by €2,600 per patient.

FeelTect’s B2B business model will sell Tight Alright technology to healthcare providers via a combination of once-off (reusable electronics) and recurring (disposables, software, data) revenue streams. Initial market traction will be generated through a clinical validation strategy and entry in targeted EU markets. Clinical evidence generated at pilot sites will enable sales growth within those markets, while also providing leverage for premium pricing strategies within lucrative secondary markets including the USA and UK.

Financing details
Project financing secured: EUR 0.30 million (20 %)

Financing source: Private

Intended financing will be a combination of private equity and matched funding from local state agencies and European grant instruments. Where appropriate, strategic investment or joint development opportunities will also be considered, as a means of supporting funding requirements and commercial strategies (e.g. distribution channels).

The promoter has received / applied for EU / EIB financing support related to this project.

Existing or potential bottlenecks for the realisation of the project / Potential risks
Risk: Lack of reimbursement.
Mitigation: Staged business model to generate post-market evidence for leveraging reimbursement coverage.

Risk: Educating providers/patients on rationale for updating a traditional therapy.
Mitigation: Strong engagement with KOLs/end-users. Participation in influential advocacy organisations. Health economic analysis within clinical validation plan.

Risk: Competitor products.
Mitigation: Strong IP protection on wearable compression pressure monitoring device.

Project additional information
FeelTect began its journey in the renowned BioInnovate Programme in 2016, where CEO Dr Andrew Cameron spent time in University Hospital Galway and Mayo Clinic identifying unmet clinical needs. A critical need was identified for a way to improve the application and maintenance of evidence-based pressure during compression therapy of venous leg ulcers, for improved healing outcomes and quality of life. An Enterprise Ireland Commercialisation Fund began in January 2018 for the development of the Tight Alright technology, which was patented in December 2018. FeelTect was founded in May 2019 and in its first clinical investigation (July 2019), Tight Alright demonstrated a 6-fold improvement in targeted pressure achievement by experienced nurses.
